Excess and unwanted hair is a common problem. Women
frequently experience this condition on the face, especially
the upper lip or eyebrow area, at the bikini line, under
their arms or on their legs. Men often have unwanted hair on
their back, chest, neck line and between their eyebrows. In
many cases excessive hair growth runs in families. Race can
also be a factor — whites are more prone to having excess
facial hair than are Asians and African Americans. White
women of Mediterranean descent are more likely to have
unwanted hair than women who have a Scandinavian background.
Hormones also play a role. Some people experience unwanted
or excess hair from the time they reach puberty; others find
it to be a condition that gets worse with age. Some women
experience additional hair growth during pregnancy or
menopause.
Conventional treatments include shaving, plucking, waxing
and depilatory creams. These methods provide temporary fixes
that are often inconvenient, messy and irritating for the
skin. Electrolysis can have good results, but is
time-consuming, sometimes painful and is useful only in
removing hairs one at a time. IP light sources are rapidly
changing hair removal treatment, providing gentle,
non-invasive, long-lasting solutions to unwanted hair on any
body area.
IPL is a breakthrough technology that uses broadband
technology to damage hair follicle for long-term hair
removal. Unlike conventional laser systems, IPL systems emit
light energy in very carefully timed burst to decrease
potential damage to surrounding skin and to maximize
effectiveness. Scientific studies show that the use of
targeted, light based energy actually damages or destroys
hair follicles at the cellular level, thus the reason IPL is
so effective and popular.

HAIR PHYSIOLOGY
Hair is in one of 4 stages of growth at any given time;
Anagen, Catagen, Telogen or Early Anagen. Hair's active
growth phase is called Anagen. During Anagen, the hair
contains an abundance of melanin. Catagen is the regression
phase when the lower part of the hair stops growing but is
not shed, and the follicle is reabsorbed. The resting phase
is called Telogen, during which the old hair falls out in
preparation for the development of new hair. The
pulsed-light treatments are most effective when hair is in
the active or Anagen phase when melanin is abundant.

Another advantage to IPL is its wide treatment area,
enabling patients to be treated rapidly. In fact,
approximately 100-200 hairs can be treated with each flash
or pulse. Sessions can last from a few minutes to a few
hours, depends on the size of the area being treated. The
number of treatments required depends on several factors
related to specific skin types and color, thickness and
density of hair. System setting can be customized to any
skin type and any body area dependant upon the individual
need. Treatments are quick, non-invasive, comfortable and
there is no "down-time". Subsequent sessions are scheduled
when the hair begins to re-grow. The timing for this can
range from four to eight weeks.
IPL is the newest technology approved by the FDA
to treat unwanted hair on all skin types,
including dark skinned individuals such as
Asian, African American, Latin American.
Treatments can also be customized according to
hair color, texture and location, any hair with
at least some pigment can be treated.
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments :
IPL treatments utilize intense pulsed light to
effectively treat rosacea, facial flushing, red
chests and necks, brown spots, sun damage and
irregular skin pigmentation all skin types.
Photo damaged skin with hyperpigmentation (brown
spots); skin laxity, enlarged pores, wrinkling,
and telangiectasia (veins) can be improved with
IPL treatments. The short wave length laser
light is used to rejuvenate skin of the face,
neck, chest, arms or hands. Specific settings
are selected for each treatment area for optimal
results. Visible improvement is achieved with
little discomfort and minimal risk.
During the treatment light energy delivers a
series of gentle pulses to the skin
non-invasively. With each flash of light there
is sequential rejuvenation of the target area
without damage to the surrounding skin.
The process begins with a consultation with the
physician or staff Technicians. A treatment plan
and schedule is designed for your skin type and
skin areas which will respond best to IPL
technology. The IPL treatment receives a high
degree of patient satisfaction because there is
no downtime, no scarring, discomfort is minimal,
and treatments are easy.

In ongoing studies,
improvements continued for more than 6 to 12
months in most patients. After the last

treatment, many patients are
able to reduce or eliminate their rosacea

For people who don't want to
take the time off to heal from laser
resurfacing or chemical peels |

For active people who don't
want to interfere with social or outdoor

Return to usual activities
immediately after treatment |

Individual treatments can
take 15-45 minutes per area |
| * |
Treatment needs to be
repeated four times, at 3 to 4 weekly
intervals |

Often combined with
microdermabrasion and chemical peel |
Indications for

Before Treatment:
| * |
The face should be cleansed
and all makeup removed |
| * |
A topical anesthetic is
applied 20 or 30 minutes before treatment |
| * |
Each treatment takes
approximately 15 to 30 minutes |
| * |
A mild amount of discomfort
can be expected |
| * |
It is very important to
avoid tanning before and after |

After Treatment:
| * |
Ice packs may be used for ten minutes after
treatment for moderate stinging sensation and
temporary redness
|
| |
in the skin |
| * |
Immediately following a treatment, the
skin may appear red and flushed and tiny capillaries may
appear more |
| |
visible. Brown spots generally appear
darker. All of these changes gradually fade over a
period of hours |
| * |
Anti-inflammatory medications such as
Advil may be taken as needed |
